Introduction

Uber Eats is an online food ordering and delivery platform that connects users with a broad range of local restaurants and food. Users can read menus, reviews, ratings, order, and pay for food from participating restaurants using an application on the iOS or Android platforms, or through a web browser. We focus on the iOS platform for our heuristic evaluation.

Executive Summary

Uber Eats is an online food ordering and delivery platform that connects users with a broad range of local restaurants and food. In this heuristic evaluation, we focus on the process of looking for existing deals and placing a pickup order on the iOS platform.

Using Nielsen Norman Group’s ten usability heuristics as a reference, we discovered a number of usability problems. Our findings have led us to create a design prioritization matrix and we aim to prioritize those that are closer to the right since they require lower effort and still bring user value.

Match between System and the Real World

  • A system-oriented term is used instead of the users’ language. This could be solved by replacing the system-oriented terms with words users are familiar with.

Consistency and Standards

  • A "+" icon is used for a drop-down menu, which may be misleading. Replacing the “+” icon with the icon Uber Eats uses for drop-down menus could solve this confusion.
  • The icon for “Stories” resembles a notification icon. We suggest changing its icon to something that represents “Stories” better.

Flexibility and Efficiency of Use

  • Users have the option to sort and filter nearby restaurants, but for some reason, it’s missing options when they use it for pickups. This could be solved by providing users with more sorting and filtering options.

Help Users Recognize, Diagnose, and Recover from Errors

  • Users can only see partial results if they make a typo in the search bar. A potential solution is to include an error message that helps users fix their typos.

Help and Documentation

  • Users have to scroll through a list of topics to find the ones they are looking for. We suggest including a search bar so users can filter out some topics.
